Facts: (CNN)
(1) Hijacker kills US citizen
(2) Hijacker is released from Germany prison early
(3) US is outraged
Outcome:
Do you think the US government will sanction the rendition of the hijacker/murderer to US shores? If so, what will the sentencing be for the person? Life in prison without parole? Capital punishiment? I am sure that a strong and vocal lobby group is rattling its sabres in D.C. They are demanding that the Bush White House do something to bring this person to US-style justice.
The sudden release of the hijacker is timed (coincidentally) with the release of a kidnapped German national in Iraq. Although the German government says there is no link between the two events, anyone with half a brain can see the relationship between the two events. The German government is clearly afraid of what the terrorists/militants are capable of doing on their own German soil.
Unfortunately, it may appear that some countries in Europe are more willing to allow terrorists to use their countries as 'staging areas' against the US. It's a sad day when the German government turns its back on a nation who helped free their people from the Nazi regime. A sad day indeed.
