At the current rate of rhetoric being tossed back and forth across the Pacific Ocean (and over the heads of us in Japan), there will be some type of military confrontation between the two states. I predict the possible confrontation will occur within the next two years.
The North Koreans will escalate their military power by firing test missiles into the sea (and toward Japan). In addition, I believe North Korea will lob a couple of those pesky little mosquito missiles toward Taiwan. What better way to ensure China's involvement than by engaging Taiwan in an all out air war. Should North Korea lob a couple of missile at Taiwan, I am sure the Taiwanese government will immediately dispatch a couple of fighter jets toward the Korean Peninsula. Not too sure if China will send up their own fighters in order to engage the Taiwanese but you can bet that the North Korean military leadership believes it must bring out a full regional war in order to further their aims. And let's not exclude the Japanese from all of these possibilities. North Korea will definitely do their best to draw the Japanese into an all out regional war.
As the USA has bilateral treaties with both nations, Japan and Taiwan, the US would automatically be drawn into a five-country war. Knowing Russia, they will sit on the sidelines and watch with much humour.
