Nice article in the NY Times about how some people are trying to preserve Japanese culture in the USA. As a Chinese-Canadian, I can recall the countless times my parents tried to get me to embrace my ethnic heritage as a child. Unfortunately, I could not relate to my parents who wanted to pass on the culture of their first home to me. It was until I visited Hong Kong in 1992 did I realize how interesting Chinese culture is. My wife and I plan on raising our children to learn about both Japanese and Chinese culture and mix it all up with a dash or two of Western Canada (the Prairies).
It might be a wee bit hard to get our future children to appreciate the wide open spaces of Saskatchewan as they stand in the middle of Metro Tokyo and 12-15M people! I guess we will have to take them up near Sendai once in a while to enjoy some open space and clean air!
